Our movie guy, James Finnegan, picks some films to watch on the TV tonight… Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Saturday 6.25pm BBC2) is, simply, a Classic. While investigating an extensive power failure in Indiana, Roy Neary (Rischard Dreyfuss) encounters a UFO. His subsequent strange behaviour then begins to worry his family, especially when he is drawn to where aliens are about to make contact. Directed and written by Stephen Speilberg, and also stars Teri Garr, Melinda Dillon and Francois Truffaut, who for once is in front of the camera. Continued below… . There is also the iconic soundtrack from John Williams with the famous five note theme that develops into communication between species. Madagascar:Escape 2 Africa (Saturday 6.30pm RTE One) is quite fun as well. The main characters, a party of animals from the Central Park Zoo whose adventures in the first film have taken them to Madagascar, find themselves in the African savannas. Here they meet others of their speci es and also where Alex the lion reunites with his parents. The film features the vocal talents of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith and Sacha Baron Cohen from the first film, and new characters are added for this, including Bernie Mac, Alec Baldwin and will.i.am, who also worked on the soundtrack with Hans Zimmer. So much for the fun and whimsical. In Training Day (Saturday 9pm RTE2) a cop on his first day in narcotics is partnered with a more seasoned officer, who has a rather loose interpretation with the rules and legalities. As they resort to ever more extreme measures to break a case, the rookie is now fighting with his conscience in a dangerous situation. Continued below… . Set over a twenty four hour period, this stars Denzel Washington, in Oscar winning form and Ethan Hawke along withScott Glenn, Cliff Curtis, Dr Dre and Snoop Dog. In a dramatic script by David Ayer and directed by Antoine Fuqua, this is a gritty, realistic tale of morals. Staying in the gritty realism realm Mammal (Saturday 9.45pm TG4) stars Rachel Griffiths as a woman repressing the trauma of her son’s death seeks solace in her relationship with a homeless teenager played by Barry Keoghan. Written and Directed by Rebecca Daly, this also stars Michael McElhatton, Nika McGuigan and Johnny Ward. The performances are impressive, and is a tale of unspoken needs and repressed emotions, so not too many laughs. On a similar theme of marital challenges, Cillian Murphy and Eva Birthistle star in writer-director Mark O’Rowe’s The Delinquent Season (Saturday 10.45pm RTE2). The lives of two middle class couples in suburban Dublin take a turn when one of the men reveals a disturbing secret which causes cracks in the two seemingly steady marriages. This also stars Andrew Scott and Catherine Walker. I’m not certain of my usual farewell this week, but Enjoy!
