'Fast X' ending explained: All about that cliffhanger, the post-credits reveal, and how it all sets up the next installment EW has reached out to reps for Lin. Lin is "not a gamer" and "leaned into that as a strength when pitching his take on the material," insiders told The Hollywood Reporter , which was the first to report the news. "He aims to find the humanity in the characters and weave timely themes into the story, while building out a world and mythology," the outlet said. Lin's previous directing credits include entries into the blockbuster car-racing franchise, including 2006's The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift; 2009's Fast & Furious; 2011's Fast Five; 2013's Fast & Furious 6; and 2021's F9: The Fast Saga. He was also behind the camera on the films Star Trek Beyond (2016) and Annapolis (2006), as well as TV episodes of True Detective, Community, and the Magnum P.I. reboot. Justin Lin and the 'F9' cast attend the film's Hollywood premiere in 2021. Rich Fury/WireImage Lin famously stepped away from his position helming the 2023 movie Fast X, days into production. "With the support of Universal, I have made the difficult decision to step back as director of Fast X, while remaining with the project as a producer," Lin said at the time. "Over 10 years and five films, we have been able to shoot the best actors, the best stunts, and the best damn car chases. On a personal note, as the child of Asian immigrants, I am proud of helping to build the most diverse franchise in movie history. I will forever be grateful to the amazing cast, crew, and studio for their support, and for welcoming me into the Fast family." Deadline reported that Lin's departure was due to creative differences.
