Article content The setup: Demolition Man takes place in a world where the Fast Food Wars and an apocalyptic earthquake have reshaped California into an ultra-polite, emotionally-repressed society. It’s only natural that driving has essentially been abolished, with citizens roving the streets in autonomous vehicles, enjoying their sun-drenched, crime-free existence largely from the back seat. Article content The cars: Aside from a heroic stint spent behind the wheel of a classic Oldsmobile 442 in protest of the period’s conservative moors, Demolition Man is a showcase for GM concept cars. We get the Pontiac Banshee (again), the Oldsmobile Aerotech II, the Cadillac Solitaire, the Chevrolet Venture, the Chevrolet California IROC Camaro, the Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray III, the Pontiac Sunfire, and the GM Ultralite all playing either prominent or background roles. Article content The roads: Big, beautiful, open—the California of Demolition Man is essentially an idealized take on the Golden State of the 90s, minus the traffic. Presumably, that all died in the quake, too. Article content The verdict: We’re still 7 years away from 2032, so we can’t authoritatively state how much Demolition Man got right in its view of what’s to come. That being said, although limited hands-free driving is now possible, thanks to weather and road conditions in parts of the world that aren’t southern California full self-driving cars remain out of reach today, with intractable problems that are likely to still exist a decade from now. Still, it’s not hard to imagine people will continue driving a gas-powered muscle cars through plate glass windows until the heat death of the universe. Article content Grade: B+.
