Others argue it’s an asteroid behaving badly. But leading theoretical physicist Avi Loeb has suggested a wilder possibility — that 3I/ATLAS might be an alien “mothership”. UFO enthusiasts are convinced it’s an extraterrestrial scout making first contact. Musk, who runs rocket giant SpaceX, said the truth was still unknown. He told Rogan: “It may be an unusual comet or asteroid, but it could be alien – I don’t know.” And while experts believe it will pass no closer than 170 million miles, Musk warned that space agencies cannot afford to ignore it. He said: “If it hit Earth, it would obliterate a continent. Maybe worse. Probably kill most of human life. If not all of us.” The object was discovered on 1 July by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System and is only the third confirmed interstellar visitor in history, after 2017’s Oumuamua and 2019’s Borisov. Scientists say it may have been drifting through deep space for 10 billion years, but its behaviour has been anything but sleepy. When it swung past the Sun on October 30, telescopes spotted non-gravitational accelerations, and a mysterious radio signal was detected — sending observers into meltdown. Professor Loeb said the anomalies meant he could “never fully rule out” an alien craft, rating it a two on his UFO scale, meaning “meriting attention”. Filmmaker and UFO researcher Mark Christopher Lee even believes humanity could make first contact by Christmas. He said: “These are weird times. The timing of 3I/ATLAS’s flyby feels like no coincidence.
