By Chris Snellgrove | Published 1 hour ago Star Trek fans around the world have been enjoying a privilege that Americans lost a long time ago: watching their favorite franchise on Netflix. In the United States, the streamer lost these rights years ago, but it has remained the best place for fans in places like Canada, the UK, and beyond to keep boldly going, one episode at a time. Unfortunately, global Netflix is losing every single Star Trek show in the New Year, forcing fans to watch the show on Paramount+ or through services such as Pluto TV. Here in America, Star Trek’s Netflix exodus began in 2021 and continued in 2022, which was part of a major effort to force fans to subscribe to Paramount+. However, the franchise has continued streaming on Netflix around the world since then, but that’s all going to change on January 9th. That’s the date that every single Trek series on the platform will be removed, which includes what most consider to be the golden age of the franchise. What’s Being Removed? On January 9th, international Netflix subscribers will lose access to Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Animated Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation , Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise. Some of these shows are arguably better than others (personally, I think DS9 is the best series ever made), but they collectively represent the best sci-fi franchise ever created. Until recently, international fans could count on Netflix as the definitive place to stream nearly four decades of genre-defining television. International Netflix subscribers are losing six Star Trek shows on January 9th, which might not seem like all that much to a casual observer. Collectively, though, this represents 30 seasons of television and a staggering 717 episodes. Major fans of the franchise are understandably sad to be losing so much quality content, especially when their best legal alternative to keep streaming episodes on demand is to switch to Paramount+ (possibly the least user-friendly streaming platform known to man). Where Else Can I Stream Star Trek Besides Paramount+? If you’re strapped for cash or just don’t want to subscribe to Paramount+, you can always watch Star Trek through Pluto TV, a free, ad-supported streaming service. It allows you to watch a rotating selection of on-demand episodes or to watch the episodes on livestreams dedicated to specific shows. Obviously, the commercials can get a bit annoying, but the ad-supported livestream replicates the nostalgic feeling of watching these shows on TV back in the day, and this is a perfect way to casually watch the show without having to figure out which episode of which series you want to watch next. Will Star Trek Ever Come Back To Netflix? While it’s not impossible to rule out that Star Trek could come back to Netflix, it’s certainly nothing we’d bet our latinum on. Netflix was already competing with Paramount to purchase Warner Bros., and after the original streamer won, Paramount launched its own hostile takeover bid. Behind the scenes, these studios’ respective execs are likely quite angry with one another, and it’s hard to imagine that Paramount would want to share its most famous IP or that Netflix would want to give Star Trek additional exposure. In many ways, Star Trek: Prodigy was a canary in the coal mine: originally, Netflix went out of its way to save the show, allowing fans to see a second season that Paramount+ had no plans to ever air. But after Season 2 ended, Netflix failed to renew the show, and it soon left the streamer. Now, with the franchise becoming far less accessible to fans all around the world, Paramount’s intended Star Trek revival may already be dead, and its potential failure (coming amid all the legal drama regarding Warner Bros.) may very well take the studio with it.
