Share on Twitter A fatality accident involving a school bus closed SR 97A for a few hours on Saturday morning. A southbound pickup on State Route 97A, about 4 miles south of Chelan, crossed the centerline early Saturday and hit a northbound Cascade School District bus head-on. Get our free mobile app The pickup rolled and came to rest in the northbound ditch, while the bus ended up on its side off the roadway. The pickup’s driver, 32-year-old Marco Trejo, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. His 63-year-old passenger died at the scene. The bus was carrying Cascade High School wrestlers on their way to a tournament in Chelan. The driver, students and coaches were taken to Lake Chelan Health as a precaution, and none sustained injuries. The Washington State Patrol says black ice contributed to the crash. Early-morning temperatures created slick conditions across the Lake Chelan area, leading to multiple collisions throughout the region. It’s not yet known whether drugs or alcohol were involved, and the crash remains under investigation.
