Why Was The Dead Zone Cancelled and Can It Be Revived? johnnyjay 5 hours ago USA’s The Dead Zone had a notable run of six seasons, but it was cut short before it could resolve its storylines. What Is It? Based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, this series follows Johnny Smith, a schoolteacher who awakens from a six-year coma to discover he now has powerful psychic abilities—including visions of the past, present, and future—triggered by physical contact. As Johnny struggles to rebuild his life, he becomes increasingly involved in helping law enforcement solve crimes, preventing disasters, and confronting a looming apocalyptic threat connected to ambitious politician Greg Stillson. Aired: USA, 2002-07, 6 Seasons Totaling 80 Episodes Starring: Anthony Michael Hall, Nicole de Boer, Chris Bruno, John L. Adams, Connor Price, David Ogden Stiers Created By: Michael Piller, Shawn Piller Why Was It Cancelled? When this sci-fi/paranormal series debuted on USA in 2002, it turned out to be a hit for the cable network, averaging 6.4 million viewers per episode for its first season. It came from Star Trek alum Michael Piller and offered an interesting blend of procedural stories with sci-fi elements while also delivering some well-crafted stories. And while it stuck around for six seasons, it flew under the radar as a genre entry, never garnering much attention from the sci-fi community. By the show’s sixth season, its viewership numbers had dropped notably—averaging only 2.1 million viewers per episode—but it had established itself as a fixture of USA’s schedule, and it certainly seemed like the network would give it the opportunity to wrap up its long-running apocalyptic story arc. But then the announcement came that the show would not continue to a seventh season, leaving it on a pretty large cliffhanger. (The network’s other genre entry, The 4400, was cancelled at the same time, also on a cliffhanger.) USA execs cited dropping ratings and increased production costs for the cancellation, and they also claimed they wanted to make room for new shows: We wish we could keep all our great shows alive forever. But we feel we need to give some of our new shows a platform to grow, and it’s with great sadness that we say goodbye to two shows that had a great run and helped create the resurgence of original programming on our network and on all of cable. But the cancellation came during the Writers’ Strike, and it certainly seemed like a punitive act toward the veteran shows. The Dead Zone had helped draw quite a lot of viewers to the cable channel, and while its ratings had slipped, it surely seemed to deserve a better fate than ending on such an abrupt note. This, of course, is another example of how some networks care very little about the shows they are producing and the audiences that tune in. They look at the entries in their lineups as products that need to turn a profit, and when they stop bringing in enough money, they drop them pretty quickly. USA certainly could have given The Dead Zone a shortened final season or at least a movie send-off to wrap up its storylines. But they dropped it without much of a second thought, leaving it with a very unsatisfying ending and an episode count just shy of what the syndication market prefers. The show has since been mostly forgotten, but perhaps there is still an opportunity to give it a better conclusion. Can It Be Revived? After USA cancelled The Dead Zone, fans organized and tried to save the series from its unjust fate. They wrote letters to the network and put up an online petition to show their support. They also lobbied other venues like The Sci Fi Channel, Lifetime, and CBS to pick it up. Nothing came of these efforts, though, leaving the show without any real closure. This one has been mostly forgotten, but it was a decent genre entry that deserved more attention than it received. It has been nearly twenty years since the cancellation, but there is still a chance to revisit the series. Anthony Michael Hall has remained active over that time, most recently making a guest appearance in the Netflix series Wednesday. He could be recruited back to The Dead Zone (and he has indicated a willingness to return to the property), and they could pick up the storyline that was never resolved and run with it. Sadly, David Ogden Stiers has passed away, but perhaps that could be worked into the story as a reason the apocalyptic visions were delayed. They could also bring back Johnny Smith’s son, and perhaps set him up to carry on as the lead in this revival. This would require a push from fans, but it might draw some interest if they could bring enough attention to the show. At 80 episodes and six seasons, the original series has a binge-worthy run under its belt. If one of the major streaming services were to pick this one up for a revival, it would come with a built-in audience, and it has the potential to carry on for several years. Or maybe even USA would be interested in bringing the show back since they are looking to revive their scripted programming. And this would not be an expensive show to produce, so it should have some appeal in the current cost-conscious, post–Peak TV environment. But fans will have to make some noise to convince the entertainment execs that this one is worth revisiting. The Dead Zone was sleeper of a sci fi TV series, and now might present a good opportunity to bring it back. Where Can You Watch It? The entire series has been released on DVD (which is currently economically priced at Amazon.com ), but it has not received the Blu-ray treatment yet. You can watch all six seasons for free (with ads) at The Roku Channel and Fawesome , and Amazon has Season 1-4 and 6 available to stream with Prime Video, but for some reason, you have to pay for Season 5. You can also purchase the entire series VOD . Did you watch The Dead Zone, and would you support fan efforts to revive the show? Chime in with your thoughts in the comments below.
