UFOs Police Report UFO Encounter Over Minneapolis As Experts Point To More Down-To-Earth Explanation Police in Minneapolis reported seeing a glowing orb moving at high speed, though experts later suggested the strange sighting was likely the International Space Station. November 24, 2025 Photo: Paul Fontana Police officers in the American city of Minneapolis have reported seeing a mysterious light in the night sky, describing it as a glowing orb surrounded by several rings that appeared to move at incredible speed. The incident took place in February this year and has since been logged with Safe Aerospace, an organisation that collects reports of unidentified aerial phenomena, often shortened to UAPs — the modern term for what most people still call UFOs. According to the officers' written report, the strange light was first spotted at around 1am while they were carrying out training exercises during their overnight shift. Believing they were looking at something out of the ordinary, the officers moved to a nearby rooftop to get a clearer view through binoculars. They described the object as a bright sphere that shifted colours rapidly, "like a tie-dye shirt in motion." They estimated it was roughly 10,000 feet above the ground — about the cruising height of a small aircraft — and appeared to be around 50 miles away. Over the next hour and a half, they said the light sometimes darted quickly across the sky before slowing down again. One of the officers even attempted to follow it in his patrol car. The report claims that the object suddenly shot upwards to around 40,000 feet when a helicopter entered the area, but then remained motionless when a small plane flew past later. Before leaving, one of the witnesses reportedly saw a second object behaving in a similar way further north, but did not stay to observe it. Adding to local speculation, the sighting occurred close to Minnesota's Prairie Island Nuclear Power Plant. UFO enthusiasts often highlight connections between sightings and nuclear sites, suggesting the two could be related. However, there is no scientific evidence supporting such a link. Researchers at Enigma Labs — a group that analyses UAP sightings — have since offered a much more ordinary explanation. Alejandro Rojas, an advisor to the organisation, said the International Space Station, or ISS, passed over the area on the night of the incident. "The ISS has flown over the area for the last few days and was very bright," Rojas explained. "What we see in the video could be the ISS, but we will need more details to rule it out." He also said that what appeared to be "rings" of colour might simply have been an optical effect known as scintillation — the same process that makes stars appear to twinkle when viewed from the ground. This effect is caused by the Earth's atmosphere distorting light from distant objects. A second sighting took place in July near the city of Anoka, around 20 miles from Minneapolis, where another witness described a similar glowing object moving along the Mississippi River. They claimed it travelled at roughly 460 miles per hour before dropping behind trees. Images and video clips from this event were also submitted to Safe Aerospace. Once again, data shows that the ISS made a visible pass over the area on the same date. Whether the officers and later witnesses saw a structured craft, a natural atmospheric effect, or a bright object in orbit, the case serves as a reminder of how easily the night sky can deceive even trained observers.
