Prime Video has made Stargate fans' dreams come true with a long-awaited reboot. Hit show Stargate SG-1 ran from 1997 to 2007, with McGyver's Richard Dean Anderson playing lead character Jack O'Neill. The premise follows a military team who travel to alien planets using a portal known as a 'Stargate', while encountering friends and foes along the way. Fans online have hailed the show, with one previously writing on Reddit : 'It's one of the best Sci Fi shows ever made (imo), some serious stories, some comedy, some social commentary all bound together with a backdrop of (mostly) coherent, believable and interesting science and technology.' Another added: 'Stargate may be my favourite Sci fi TV show of all time. There are objectively better ones but there's just something special about sg1.' The popular Stargate franchise is getting a reboot — 15 years on from its final episode The original TV series Stargate SG-1 aired from 1997 to 2007 Popular spin-off Stargate Atlantis aired from 2004 to 2009 SG-1 spawned two spin-offs, Stargate Atlantis (2004-2009) and Stargate Universe (2009-2011), the latter of which had concluded the MGM franchise — until now. The brand new TV series will see Martin Gero, who worked on Stargate Atlantis, serve as showrunner. He said in a statement: 'Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis. 'I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, Stargate taught me everything about making television – it’s written into my DNA.’ Continuing, Gero reiterated his intention to 'guide this incredible franchise into its next phase.' He added: 'For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith – this one’s for you. 'And for those that are new to our world – I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.' The franchise originally concluded with Stargate Universe, which starred Robert Carlyle and Lou Diamond Phillips Martin Gero, who worked as a story editor on Stargate Atlantis, will be showrunner for the new series Nick Pepper, Head of US SVOD TV development for Amazon MGM Studios, added: ‘Stargate is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos'. In addition, original showrunners Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi are reported to be serving as consulting producers for the new series. Although largely associated with TV, Stargate actually began its existence as a 1994 film. Kurt Russell and James Spader starred as Jack O'Neil and Daniel Jackson, with the roles being recast for TV.
