"Underrated" but "iconic" sci-fi franchise to return with huge new streaming series And it's in good hands. By Shaun Kitchener Published: 19 November 2025 One of the most highly regarded, if arguably underappreciated sci-fi franchises of all time is set to make a big comeback for Prime Video, it has been announced. Originating as a movie back in 1994 and last seen as a web series in 2018, it's one of many brands to have new projects greenlit by Amazon MGM Studios. It is, of course, Stargate – a franchise that takes its name from a fictional ring-shaped device that forms a wormhole, enabling rapid space travel. Its previous TV outings include Stargate SG-1, which ran from 1997 to 2007; Stargate Atlantis (2004-2009) and Stargate Universe (2009-2011). What to Read Next It's mostly been highly regarded by pop culture commentators, branded "underrated" by Collider and "iconic" by Variety . The new series will be helmed by Martin Gero, who'll serve as creator, writer, executive producer and showrunner, according to Deadline . "Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis," he said. "I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, Stargate taught me everything about making television — it's written into my DNA. I'm beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. "For those who've kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one's for you. And for those that are new to our world — I promise you're in for something extraordinary." Nick Pepper, head of US SVOD TV Development at Amazon MGM Studios, added in a statement: "Stargate is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity's place in the cosmos. Also on board as an executive producer is none other than Roland Emmerich, who directed the 1994 movie that started the entire Stargate story on-screen. Previously announced IPs that are being given a similar treatment by Amazon MGM include a Legally Blonde prequel entitled Elle , and a Tomb Raider show with Sophie Turner front and centre.
