Mystery fireball UFO spotted in sky over Plymouth Rom Preston-Ellis Thu 13 November 2025 at 3:23 pm UTC 3 min read A Plymouth dad has been left mystified by a flaming object seen floating in the skies above the city. Carl Burnett, 35, spotted the sparking ball of fire travelling above North Road West towards the Hoe on New Year's Day. Mr Burnett was with his young son when they saw the burning light and they now want to know if anyone else spotted it. "I was out with my son just before 5pm last night and saw a ball of fire going through the sky," he said. Advertisement "I filmed it because I wasn't sure if anyone else had seen it. "It looked a bit bigger than a tennis ball with flickers of fire coming from it." It's thought that the bright light could have been a Chinese Lantern although Carl, from Plymouth, said he couldn't be certain of what it was. It's the latest in a string of mystery sightings across the city. It got 450,000 hits!” The mysterious burning lights were made by fireworks trailing from two small aircraft and the multi-coloured LED strips that decorate the plane’s panelling, which were performing above Pentillie Castle, Saltash , for a wedding . Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement It was reported how Alan Kingwell, 62, shot a timelapse video in his garden — and later discovered the mysterious dark shapes when he edited the film. The video shows two dark shapes "flying" motionlessly in the blue sky and sometimes being covered by clouds. And after seeing similar shapes on one of his photographs, David Shepherd, from Plymstock , believed he may have seen the same thing. After his eye was caught by an ‘X’ shape of airplane contrails in the sky, David noticed a little black shape beneath them which he believes “looked similar” to the one seen in Mr Kingwell's footage.
