The great John Williams is currently working with Steven Spielberg once again, this time on the score for the filmmaker’s mystery thriller, due for release in 2026. Williams, now in his 90s, previously announced his retirement after working on the score for Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny. It’s now said that he’s been coaxed back into the studio and is busy in Los Angeles; that’s according to a reliable source, too – Damian Woetzel, the president of The Julliard School. The New York performing arts conservatory hosted an event on the 27th October – John Williams: A Composer’s Life – A Night of Stories and Music, dedicated to one of the school’s most famous pupils. That evening, Woetzel revealed that Williams “is in Los Angeles doing what he does: he is working with Steven Spielberg on the next movie. And that is something to be happy about.” That revelation was posted on social media by journalist Doug Adams, picked up by the John Williams Fan Network , and reached our eyes and brains thanks to World of Reel. Although Williams’ involvement hasn’t been officially announced by Universal, the news comes from a fairly reliable source. Remarkably little is known about Spielberg’s next movie. For a while, it was going under a couple of working titles, including The Dish and Disclosure, and it’s widely said to be about UFOs. Its screenplay is by David Koepp, who wrote the script for Jurassic Park, and he’s previously said that it’ll hark back to Spielberg’s classic work in the 1970s and 80s. Emily Blunt and Wyatt Russell are among the cast, and filming got underway in February and wrapped in June. That means Spielberg should be busy in post-production on something Universal simply describes as a “new original event film.” Williams has, of course, composed some iconic scores for Spielberg in the past, with Jaws, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind and Raiders Of The Lost Ark being just a few of them. Whatever this next film is, a Williams backdrop would indeed make it an event. The currently untitled film’s due in cinemas on the 12th June 2026.
